WELCOME TO MISANTHROPOZINE #2
SLEEPERS/DREAMERS
Dear XOXO,
How to work in your time to be in your time?
We invite you to become SLEEPERS/DREAMERS. We are plotting a 60-hour performance, triggered by Mondial Festival, an event by SUPERSTUDIO and 9999 at Florence club Space Electronic in 1971. This festival was a pedagogic experiment, an alternative school of architecture, that saw the club transformed into an underground forest with trees, a lake, rocks, and bathed in projections and sounds. Fifty years later, we need alternative systems, spaces and experiences for school-making and sharing also. But what is there to share? And what kind of architect can we become?
We will lock ourselves in a green-keyed primitive hut, and accelerate the coming of age of a new maker. On a landscape sprinkled with post-millennial souvenirs and SUPERLACK modules, we try to live for three days and two nights, live-streamed to a remote audience. During those 60 hours, we search for connections or updates of SUPERSTUDIO’s radical search for life beyond and despite of architecture and its nurturing systems. Trapped in a loop of oversaturated images, positions, beliefs and agendas, we SLEEPERS/DREAMERS must find ways to work. Crushed on the left and cuddled to death on the right by agents of self-referential orthodoxies, we lay paralyzed. Perhaps the only thing we need is sleep?
And as our dummies doze off into voxel dreamlands, we hold tight to our screens, airing a snowflakey goo of tutorials, videos and guest appearances to dear dear onlookers. Caring for avocados, adjusting ring lights, idling to the tender voicings of old sweet ceremonies, radiating a present but dreaming beyond. Will you join us SLEEPERS/DREAMERS, broadcasting our slow surrender to the obsessions, fears, hopes and secrets that come with living and working in a duck-faced, caffeinated culture?
WILL YOU JOIN US TOO?
HOW IT WORKS:
The protagonists of SLEEPERS/DREAMERS want to assemble, let surface, ferment, collide, massage different attitudes and different contexts as embodied in their work.
We believe we are critical agents, and produce questions rather than answers. But we also believe this benefits from a rather cool approach. To combine these would be the core of our work: Cool Criticality.
If you want to become SLEEPER/DREAMER with us, there’s a few options to join.
LIVE
Over the last weeks, we’ve designed and built a chroma-keyed primitive hut. We will step into this coming-of-age incubator, and you’re most welcome to do so, too. The hut is located in the PJG studio in Oostende, at the Belgian coast.
REMOTE
In case you’re not in Belgium, or if you just wish to be with us via screens, we invite you to set up your personal, remote version of SLEEPERS/DREAMERS. A green blanket, a ring light, a webcam - or your personal props, IRL or virtual: you’re good to go! We can key you in the live-stream, and hold you close.
REC
Do you want to record a video, or pass on a pre-recorded video piece, film, still image, sound file? We’ll be living with our screens close to our bodies, and the walls of our hut are a surface to program content. Whether you’ll join us live or remotely, we look forward to your (moving) images. Soundtracks and playlists would be nice, too!
ACTIVE VIEWER
Don’t feel like going live and SLEEPING/DREAMING, but still interested in taking part in the conversation? We’d love to meet you on Twitch, where we’ll reside for 2,5 days. Please talk to us, sing a song, type a story, order us a pizza. Let's eat together. Shake our shake. X!
Let’s dance! Mail or call, and we’ll meet soon.
